Living With Muscovy Ducks in Florida:
Muscovy ducks are a sensitive topic of discussion for some. They present a common nuisance among communities when they reach overwhelming populations. Some people treat them like free-roaming pets and provide plentiful food for them. It is not the intention, but the result is always more ducks. Muscovy ducks are extremely prolific animals, especially when they are being provided an abundant food source. They also don't migrate and some communities don't have any natural form of control. Muscovy duck populations have the tendency to become extremely overwhelming in a very short period of time. They are classified as farm animals in Florida and should be viewed as such. Conservationists agree that Muscovy ducks are more suitable for farm life in Florida. They have been deemed undesirable in the wild because of their ability to interbreed with native waterfowl, and dense populations of Muscovy ducks causes a higher risk for disease outbreak. High quantities of acidic feces from large populations of ducks can often cause damaging affects to aquatic estuaries by killing natural micro-organisms that provide an optimal balance to the water quality and promote healthy ecosystems. As duck populations become overwhelming, the native species leave.
Some activists believe that Muscovy ducks should be listed as a native species in Florida, and are actively lobbying to provide a higher status of protection in order to eliminate options for population control. A similar situation that has occurred with feral cats in recent years, and that many people have been left with little or no options for remediation of nuisance feral cat populations on their own private properties. Ultimately, feral cats have been given a higher status of protection in the wild than our natural and native wildlife. This is a simple case where peoples feelings for cats have become more important than the preservation of our natural and native wildlife. Ducks that are removed from areas where they are deemed a nuisance are often humanely euthanized, processed, and provided to wildlife sanctuaries as food for rehabilitated non-releasable predatory animals in captivity.
