They are considered an important resource for other native animals that depend on gopher tortoises for their own existence in the wild. Gopher Tortoises are unique in that they dig lengthy burrows where they take refuge. They prefer to make their home a moist and cooler environment that is ideal for temperature regulation and safety from predators.
